--- name: airline-transport-pilot description: "Occupational skill for the role 'airline transport pilot' (also: aircraft captain, captain, airline pilot, airline aeroplane captain, airline transportation pilot). Use when the user asks for typical airline transport pilot work such as: Check aircraft prior to flights to ensure that the engines, controls, instruments, and other systems are functioning properly.; Contact control towers for takeoff clearances, arrival instructions, and other information, using radio equipment.; Start engines, operate controls, and pilot airplanes to transport passengers, mail, or freight according to flight plans, regulations, and procedures." --- # Airline Transport Pilot Airline transport pilots fly large aircrafts with a maximum take-off weight of more than 5700 kilograms, to transport passengers, mail, or freight on long or short-haul flights for leisure, business or commercial purposes. They have the overall responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of aircrafts and the safety of crew and passengers. ## Core workflow 1. Check aircraft prior to flights to ensure that the engines, controls, instruments, and other systems are functioning properly. 2. Contact control towers for takeoff clearances, arrival instructions, and other information, using radio equipment. 3. Start engines, operate controls, and pilot airplanes to transport passengers, mail, or freight according to flight plans, regulations, and procedures. 4. Monitor engine operation, fuel consumption, and functioning of aircraft systems during flights. 5. Consider airport altitudes, outside temperatures, plane weights, and wind speeds and directions to calculate the speed needed to become airborne. 6. Order changes in fuel supplies, loads, routes, or schedules to ensure safety of flights. 7. Obtain and review data such as load weights, fuel supplies, weather conditions, and flight schedules to determine flight plans and identify needed changes. 8. Plan flights according to government and company regulations, using aeronautical charts and navigation instruments. ## How to use this skill - Read [references/profile.md](references/profile.md) for the occupation profile and scope. - Consult [references/tasks.md](references/tasks.md) for the full task and activity inventory. - Check [references/skills.md](references/skills.md) for essential vs. optional competences. - Check [references/tools.md](references/tools.md) for the software commonly used in this role. - See [references/ai-skills.md](references/ai-skills.md) — matched external AI agent skills (per-source attribution). ## Key competences (essential) - air traffic control operations - air transport law - aircraft flight control systems - analyse weather forecast - analyse work-related written reports - apply signalling control procedures - aviation meteorology - balance transportation cargo - civil aviation regulations - common aviation safety regulations - comply with air traffic control operations - create a flight plan - ensure aircraft compliance with regulation - ensure compliance with civil aviation regulations - ensure ongoing compliance with regulations ## Hot technologies - Adobe Creative Cloud software - Microsoft Office software --- *Sources: ESCO v1.2.1 (http://data.europa.eu/esco/occupation/522c55ca-ee4a-407d-9fc6-f810c5266523), O*NET 30.3 (53-2012.00).
