--- name: marine-engineering-drafter description: "Occupational skill for the role 'marine engineering drafter' (also: marine draughter, naval engineering drafter, marine draftsperson, marine drafter, shipbuilding drafter, marine engineering drafting specialist). Use when the user asks for typical marine engineering drafter work such as: Design complete hull and superstructure according to specifications and test data, in conformity with standards of safety, efficiency, and economy.; Study design proposals and specifications to establish basic characteristics of craft, such as size, weight, speed, propulsion, displacement, and draft.; Perform monitoring activities to ensure that ships comply with international regulations and standards for life-saving equipment and pollution preventatives." --- # Marine Engineering Drafter Marine engineering drafters convert the marine engineers’ designs into technical drawings usually using software. Their drawings detail dimensions, fastening and assembling methods and other specifications used in the manufacture of all types of boats from pleasure crafts to naval vessels, including submarines. ## Core workflow 1. Design complete hull and superstructure according to specifications and test data, in conformity with standards of safety, efficiency, and economy. 2. Study design proposals and specifications to establish basic characteristics of craft, such as size, weight, speed, propulsion, displacement, and draft. 3. Perform monitoring activities to ensure that ships comply with international regulations and standards for life-saving equipment and pollution preventatives. 4. Evaluate performance of craft during dock and sea trials to determine design changes and conformance with national and international standards. 5. Prepare plans, estimates, design and construction schedules, and contract specifications, including any special provisions. 6. Check, test, and maintain automatic controls and alarm systems. 7. Design layout of craft interior, including cargo space, passenger compartments, ladder wells, and elevators. 8. Evaluate operation of marine equipment during acceptance testing and shakedown cruises. ## How to use this skill - Read [references/profile.md](references/profile.md) for the occupation profile and scope. - Consult [references/tasks.md](references/tasks.md) for the full task and activity inventory. - Check [references/skills.md](references/skills.md) for essential vs. optional competences. - Check [references/tools.md](references/tools.md) for the software commonly used in this role. - See [references/ai-skills.md](references/ai-skills.md) — matched external AI agent skills (per-source attribution). ## Key competences (essential) - CADD software - CAE software - create technical plans - design drawings - engineering principles - engineering processes - execute analytical mathematical calculations - ICT software specifications - liaise with engineers - mathematics - mechanics - mechanics of vessels - naval architecture - read engineering drawings - technical drawings ## Hot technologies - The MathWorks MATLAB - Autodesk AutoCAD - Dassault Systemes SolidWorks - Microsoft Access - Adobe Acrobat - Microsoft Outlook - SAP software - Microsoft Office software - Microsoft PowerPoint - Microsoft Project --- *Sources: ESCO v1.2.1 (http://data.europa.eu/esco/occupation/2ac509e8-2850-42c3-b11d-d24077a7921b), O*NET 30.3 (17-2121.00).
