name: telecommunications-engineer
description: "Occupational skill for the role 'telecommunications engineer' (also: radio engineer, transmission engineer, broadcast engineer, communications designer, telecoms engineer, information systems engineer). Use when the user asks for typical telecommunications engineer work such as: Keep abreast of changes in industry practices and emerging telecommunications technology by reviewing current literature, talking with colleagues, participating in educational programs, attending meetings or workshops, or participating in professional organizations or conferences.; Estimate costs for system or component implementation and operation.; Develop, maintain, or implement telecommunications disaster recovery plans to ensure business continuity."
---
# Telecommunications Engineer
Telecommunications engineers design, build, test and maintain telecommunication systems and networks, including radio and broadcasting equipment.
They analyse customer needs and requirements, ensure that the equipment meets regulations, and prepare and present reports and proposals on telecommunication-related problems. Telecommunications engineers design and oversee the service delivery in all it's phases, supervising the installation and use of telecommunications equipment and facilities, preparing documentation and providing training for company staff once new equipment has been installed.
## Core workflow
1. Keep abreast of changes in industry practices and emerging telecommunications technology by reviewing current literature, talking with colleagues, participating in educational programs, attending meetings or workshops, or participating in professional organizations or conferences.
2. Estimate costs for system or component implementation and operation.
3. Develop, maintain, or implement telecommunications disaster recovery plans to ensure business continuity.
4. Review and evaluate requests from engineers, managers, and technicians for system modifications.
5. Provide user support by diagnosing network and device problems and implementing technical or procedural solutions.
6. Prepare system activity and performance reports.
7. Prepare purchase requisitions for computer hardware and software, networking and telecommunications equipment, test equipment, cabling, or tools.
8. Use computer-aided design (CAD) software to prepare or evaluate network diagrams, floor plans, or site configurations for existing facilities, renovations, or new systems.
## How to use this skill
- Read [references/profile.md](references/profile.md) for the occupation profile and scope.
- Consult [references/tasks.md](references/tasks.md) for the full task and activity inventory.
- Check [references/skills.md](references/skills.md) for essential vs. optional competences.
- Check [references/tools.md](references/tools.md) for the software commonly used in this role.
- See [references/ai-skills.md](references/ai-skills.md) — matched external AI agent skills (per-source attribution).

# External AI agent skills — telecommunications-engineer
Proven, publicly available AI agent skills mapped to this occupation.
Nothing is copied from the sources: every entry is a name, a one-line
summary and a link to the upstream skill package. Each section names
its source repository, commit, license and retrieval date.
**Tiers:** `core` = the skill directly exercises a top market hard
skill, tool or method (from gated job-ad evidence) or an essential
ESCO competence of this occupation; `adjacent` =
plausibly useful, secondary. Entries are capped at 12 per source
and 80 in total per occupation (core first,
strongest matches survive); everything beyond the caps is excluded
and logged in the pipeline audit trail, not in this package.
_Matched deterministically (ISCO group + title/competence keywords,
tiered against market evidence + ESCO essentials) by
`pipeline/p5_enrich_ai_skills.py` on 2026-07-14._
