scientific-laboratory-technician Occupational skill for the role 'scientific laboratory technician' (also: laboratory technology specialist, lab assistant, chemistry laboratory assistant, laboratory assistant, laboratory technology expert, laboratory technologist). Use when the user asks for typical scientific laboratory technician work such as: Set up, maintain, calibrate, clean, and test sterility of medical laboratory equipment.; Conduct chemical analyses of body fluids, such as blood or urine, using microscope or automatic analyzer to detect abnormalities or diseases and enter findings into computer.; Analyze the results of tests or experiments to ensure conformity to specifications, using special mechanical or electrical devices.

Scientific Laboratory Technician

Scientific laboratory technicians carry out laboratory-based research, analysis and testing and support life science professionals. They sample, test, measure, research and analyse in areas such as biology, biotechnology, environmental science, forensic science and pharmacology. Scientific laboratory technicians also observe and monitor laboratory activities, record test sequences and analyse the results.

Core workflow

  1. Set up, maintain, calibrate, clean, and test sterility of medical laboratory equipment.
  2. Conduct chemical analyses of body fluids, such as blood or urine, using microscope or automatic analyzer to detect abnormalities or diseases and enter findings into computer.
  3. Analyze the results of tests or experiments to ensure conformity to specifications, using special mechanical or electrical devices.
  4. Collect blood or tissue samples from patients, observing principles of asepsis to obtain blood sample.
  5. Supervise or instruct other technicians or laboratory assistants.
  6. Prepare standard volumetric solutions or reagents to be combined with samples, following standardized formulas or experimental procedures.
