description: "Occupational skill for the role 'medical physics expert' (also: MPE, medical radiation physics expert, patients radiation protection optimisation expert, dosimetry expert, medical radiation physics specialist, medical physics specialist). Use when the user asks for typical medical physics expert work such as: Advise oncology team members on use of beam modifying or immobilization devices in radiation treatment plans.; Calculate, or verify calculations of, prescribed radiation doses.; Calculate the delivery of radiation treatment, such as the amount or extent of radiation per session, based on the prescribed course of radiation therapy."

# Medical Physics Expert
Medical physics experts advice on matters related to radiation physics applied to medical exposure. They are responsible for dosimetry and the optimisation of the radiation protection of patients and other individuals subjected to medical exposure, including the application and use of diagnostic reference levels. Medical physics experts are involved in the selection of medical radiological equipment, the quality assurance including acceptance testing, the preparation of technical specifications, and the installation, design and surveillance of the medical radiological installations. They also analyse the events involving accidental or unintended medical exposures and are responsible for the training of practitioners and other staff in relevant aspects of radiation protection.
## Core workflow
1. Advise oncology team members on use of beam modifying or immobilization devices in radiation treatment plans.
2. Calculate, or verify calculations of, prescribed radiation doses.
3. Calculate the delivery of radiation treatment, such as the amount or extent of radiation per session, based on the prescribed course of radiation therapy.
4. Conduct radiation oncology-related research, such as improving computer treatment planning systems or developing new treatment devices.
5. Create and transfer reference images and localization markers for treatment delivery, using image-guided radiation therapy.
6. Design the arrangement of radiation fields to reduce exposure to critical patient structures, such as organs, using computers, manuals, and guides.
7. Develop radiation treatment plans in consultation with members of the radiation oncology team.
8. Develop requirements for the use of patient immobilization devices and positioning aides, such as molds or casts, as part of treatment plans to ensure accurate delivery of radiation and comfort of patient.
## How to use this skill

- See [references/ai-skills.md](references/ai-skills.md) — matched external AI agent skills (per-source attribution).
## Key competences (essential)

- advise on medical device features
- apply radiation protection procedures

# External AI agent skills — medical-physics-expert
Proven, publicly available AI agent skills mapped to this occupation.
Nothing is copied from the sources: every entry is a name, a one-line
summary and a link to the upstream skill package. Each section names
its source repository, commit, license and retrieval date.
**Tiers:** `core` = the skill directly exercises a top market hard
skill, tool or method (from gated job-ad evidence) or an essential
ESCO competence of this occupation; `adjacent` =
plausibly useful, secondary. Entries are capped at 12 per source
and 80 in total per occupation (core first,
strongest matches survive); everything beyond the caps is excluded
and logged in the pipeline audit trail, not in this package.
