description: "Occupational skill for the role 'nuclear engineer' (also: nuclear engineering expert, nuclear engineering specialist, nuclear engineers, atomic decommissioning engineer, nuclear technology engineering expert, nuclear technology engineering specialist). Use when the user asks for typical nuclear engineer work such as: Conduct environmental studies on topics such as nuclear power generation, nuclear waste disposal, or nuclear weapon deployment.; Design fuel cycle models or processes to reduce the quantity of radioactive waste generated from nuclear activities.; Develop or contribute to the development of plans to remediate or restore environments affected by nuclear radiation, such as waste disposal sites."

# Nuclear Engineer
Nuclear engineers plan and design engineering equipment and processes in nuclear plants and sites. They engage in engineering activities pertaining to nuclear power plants, and develop risk solutions.
## Core workflow
1. Conduct environmental studies on topics such as nuclear power generation, nuclear waste disposal, or nuclear weapon deployment.
2. Design fuel cycle models or processes to reduce the quantity of radioactive waste generated from nuclear activities.
3. Develop or contribute to the development of plans to remediate or restore environments affected by nuclear radiation, such as waste disposal sites.
4. Direct environmental compliance activities associated with nuclear plant operations or maintenance.
5. Prepare environmental impact statements, reports, or presentations for regulatory or other agencies.
6. Prepare technical reports of findings or recommendations, based on synthesized analyses of test results.
7. Design or direct nuclear research projects to develop, test, modify, or discover new uses for theoretical models.
8. Consult with other scientists to determine parameters of experimentation or suitability of analytical models.
## How to use this skill
- Read [references/profile.md](references/profile.md) for the occupation profile and scope.
- Consult [references/tasks.md](references/tasks.md) for the full task and activity inventory.
- Check [references/skills.md](references/skills.md) for essential vs. optional competences.
- Check [references/tools.md](references/tools.md) for the software commonly used in this role.
- See [references/ai-skills.md](references/ai-skills.md) — matched external AI agent skills (per-source attribution).
## Key competences (essential)
- adjust engineering designs
- approve engineering design
- calculate exposure to radiation
- calibrate precision instrument
- civil engineering
- contamination exposure regulations
- design strategies for nuclear emergencies
- develop radiation protection strategies
- electric generators
- engineering principles
- engineering processes
- ensure compliance with environmental legislation
- ensure compliance with radiation protection regulations
- ensure compliance with safety legislation
- follow nuclear plant safety precautions

# External AI agent skills — nuclear-engineer
Proven, publicly available AI agent skills mapped to this occupation.
Nothing is copied from the sources: every entry is a name, a one-line
summary and a link to the upstream skill package. Each section names
its source repository, commit, license and retrieval date.
**Tiers:** `core` = the skill directly exercises a top market hard
skill, tool or method (from gated job-ad evidence) or an essential
ESCO competence of this occupation; `adjacent` =
plausibly useful, secondary. Entries are capped at 12 per source
and 80 in total per occupation (core first,
strongest matches survive); everything beyond the caps is excluded
and logged in the pipeline audit trail, not in this package.
_Matched deterministically (ISCO group + title/competence keywords,
tiered against market evidence + ESCO essentials) by
