Radiation Protection Technician

Radiation protection technicians monitor radiation levels in buildings and facilities to ensure compliance with health and safety standards, and to prevent dangerous elevations in the radiation level. They take measures to minimise radiation emissions, and to prevent further contamination in the event of radiation pollution, by developing radiation protection plans, in particular for nuclear plants and facilities.

Core workflow

  1. Brief workers on radiation levels in work areas.
  2. Analyze samples, such as air or water samples, for contaminants or other elements.
  3. Place radioactive waste, such as sweepings or broken sample bottles, into containers for shipping or disposal.
  4. Calculate safe radiation exposure times for personnel using plant contamination readings and prescribed safe levels of radiation.
  5. Provide initial response to abnormal events or to alarms from radiation monitoring equipment.
  6. Monitor personnel to determine the amounts and intensities of radiation exposure.
  7. Inform supervisors when individual exposures or area radiation levels approach maximum permissible limits.
  8. Instruct personnel in radiation safety procedures and demonstrate use of protective clothing and equipment.
