synthetic-materials-engineer Occupational skill for the role 'synthetic materials engineer' (also: plastics production engineer, synthetic materials production engineer, polymers production engineer, synthetic materials research engineer, polymers development engineer, plastics quality engineer). Use when the user asks for typical synthetic materials engineer work such as: Perform experiments and computer modeling to study the nature, structure, and physical and chemical properties of metals and their alloys, and their responses to applied forces.; Prepare reports, manuscripts, proposals, and technical manuals for use by other scientists and requestors, such as sponsors and customers.; Supervise and monitor production processes to ensure efficient use of equipment, timely changes to specifications, and project completion within time frame and budget.

Synthetic Materials Engineer

Synthetic materials engineers develop new synthetic materials processes or improve existing ones. They design and construct installations and machines for the production of synthetic materials and examine samples of raw materials in order to ensure quality.

Core workflow

  1. Perform experiments and computer modeling to study the nature, structure, and physical and chemical properties of metals and their alloys, and their responses to applied forces.
  2. Prepare reports, manuscripts, proposals, and technical manuals for use by other scientists and requestors, such as sponsors and customers.
  3. Supervise and monitor production processes to ensure efficient use of equipment, timely changes to specifications, and project completion within time frame and budget.
  4. Write research papers for publication in scientific journals.
  5. Plan laboratory experiments to confirm feasibility of processes and techniques used in the production of materials with special characteristics.
  6. Confer with customers to determine how to tailor materials to their needs.
  7. Conduct research on the structures and properties of materials, such as metals, alloys, polymers, and ceramics, to obtain information that could be used to develop new products or enhance existing ones.
  8. Devise testing methods to evaluate the effects of various conditions on particular materials.
